The iconic Freetrade building on Manchester’s Peter Street has been a hub of trade and commercial enterprise since the Victorian era. Following its recent development, the space is now an awe-inspiring workplace, steeped in history but bursting with contemporary style and comfort.

JSJ UK carried out bespoke joinery throughout the building, with our standout input being the showcase second floor. Designed to inspire prospective tenants, the second floor has been fully fit out, bringing the building to its full potential with flawless modern office design against an inspiring Victorian backdrop.

JSJ UK’s input included a bespoke dividing wall with an open string screen. The feature brings design to the forefront but also serves a practical and textural purpose, separating spaces and ensuring the area feels cosy and inviting despite its scale and grandeur.

Beams found elsewhere in the building were replicated by JSJ UK and inserted into the ceiling of the second-floor show office. Meanwhile, JSJ UK’s tea point, shelving, and booth seating complete the space.

Replicating original features was a key part of our role, and we also went to great lengths to carefully replicate, reproduce and restore decorative mouldings, bringing damaged originals back to life where possible and installing replicas elsewhere.

In the reception area, a bench seat manufactured by JSJ UK stretches 4.5m high, creating a dramatic focal point befitting of the imposing building. Meanwhile, this project saw us work with Viroc for the first time, a material combining the strength and durability of cement with the flexibility and workability of wood, while utilising a concrete / wood hybrid to craft eye-catching wall signage running up the stairs.

Joinery in all toilets and hygiene areas was also delivered to a high spec by JSJ UK.

Predominantly working in lacquered ply, the end result is a modern, inviting office space that is at once befitting of the building and celebrates its historic qualities.
