JSJ were appointed to design, develop, and manufacture a broad selection of bespoke joinery solutions for the £2 million pound refurbishment of The Wilton Centre Project, Redcar. The six-month project has seen the creation of a new entrance, reception, co-working & event spaces, meeting pods and new restaurant food hall area.
The Wilton Centre is the premier science park in the North East of England and provides office, laboratory and pilot plant accommodation. It is one of Europe’s largest R&D facilities and houses several leading global and regional businesses in the chemical, manufacturing, and life science industries.

The team at JSJ were involved early in the design process to provide their advice and ideas for the bespoke joinery designs for the Wilton Centre. Initial design work included producing detailed design drawings from CGI proposals, detailing the joinery specifics to enable manufacture and a seamless installation.
JSJ’s involvement in the project was from concept to completion. Design, development, innovation, manufacture in their Preston workshop, and installation on site, backed up by advice and guidance throughout the project.
The scope of work included renovations to the reception area, breakout areas and canteen. JSJ delivered the following:
Bespoke reception desk
Upon entrance to the centre visitors are met by a beautiful bespoke reception desk; finished in black, it was created from a combination of clear lacquered oak and oak veneer materials. The curved, sleek design features a solid surface façade top surround and integrated branding signage with LED lighting.
Curved internet bar
Made from CNC routed MR MDF with a paint spray lacquered finish, this bespoke bar top provides a long run of workspace for numerous people to chat, charge and work away! The oak veneer worktop is mounted on secret cantilever brackets to provide a seamless, clean design.
News station
This beautiful ‘one off’ piece of bespoke furniture was handcrafted out of clear lacquered oak and oak veneer materials with routed MR MDF paint spray lacquered finished linings. The station features a striking design combining shelving, planters and decorative artificial planting at high level with integrated storage at low level.
Bespoke slatted feature screens
These contemporary looking screens provide space definition and an element of privacy, whilst maintaining the lightopen feeling of the interior space. Made from a combination of clear lacquered oak and oak veneer materials, the horizontal slats are held in place by a powder coated bespoke made metal framework, all designed, manufactured, and installed by JSJ.
Bespoke feature wall dividers
This elegant feature wall provides visual impact as well as practical shelving space. Made from a combination of clear lacquered oak and oak veneer materials to make up the wooden elements, the structure features powder coated bespoke made metalwork, from floor to ceiling. JSJ developed a new method of fixing to allow the framework and dividers to be made in kit form for easy installation on site and secret fixing.
Feature call out station
This custom-made piece of powder coated metal framework furniture was designed to allow for transport to site and easy installation from kit form, with a modular structure design. The station includes integrated linings and shelving with planters made from clear lacquered oak veneer MDF and features integrated decorative artificial planting to help enhance the biophilic design elements within the overall refurbishment concept.

The Wilton Centre has fantastic on-site facilities which include a restaurant food hall, meeting rooms, event space, gym, lecture theatre and fully serviced laboratories.
Jeroen Houtzager, director of Trinity Investment Management – which owns Wilton Centre and four other UK science parks – said:
